On Wednesday, the Taylor Fluid Systems Peewee C Stratford Aces
played host to their season rivals, the Mitchell Meteors. The Aces started the game with an aggressive
forecheck that led to several scoring opportunities early in the first. They kept the Meteors on their heels,
effectively cycling the puck behind the net and making centering passes at key
moments. With 4:27 left in the first,
Deirdre Parsons made good on her opportunity as she banged home the rebound,
giving the Aces the early lead.
Mitchell responded by forcing a turnover in the Aces defensive zone and netting the tying goal.
The deadlock was short-live. Grace Laverty unloaded a shot from the blue line that changed direction off a Meteors’ stick and wound up in the back of the net.
The Aces maintained the one goal advantage well into the third period. Superb back-checking by Devan Taylor spoiled the Meteors’ best chance to tie the game on a breakaway. Afterwards, the Aces battled in their own end for puck control. Finally, Ally Wheal gathered the puck and fired a breakout pass to a streaking Josie Walker who rang one off the post and in, sealing the Meteors’ fate with a final score 3-1.
The Aces will play again at home on Saturday when they host the St. Mary’s Rock.
