The Downie Optimist Midget A Aces went undefeated in the Walter Gretzky Tournament this weekend to take home a gold medal.  Stratford edged the Hamilton Hawks, 2-1, in the opening match.  The Aces struck early on a goal by Emily Patterson in the first two minutes of the game.  Despite penalty trouble in the second, they were able to hold the Hawks off  until the third period, to a single goal.  Taylor Woodhouse secured the win with an unassisted short-handed goal late in the third. Shannon Jewitt and Kayla Veldman were powerhouses in the defensive zone.  Game MVP, Megan Jackson, was stellar in net.

The Downie Optimist Midget A Aces fell 1-0 to the Saugeen Maitland Lightning in a fiesty battle, last weekend. The Aces played hard in a penalty filled contest with the Lightning, despite having two of their goals called off by the Saugeen referees.  Stratford never gave up as they came close in the third period but couldn't sink one that counted.

The Brantford Ice Cats were no contest for the Downie Optimist Midget A Aces last weekend, as the Aces dominated with a 5-1 victory.  The Aces took the lead with three first period goals and never looked back. They topped it up in the third period with two more on the scoreboard. Brantford was lucky to score just as the curfew buzzer ended the game.  Caroline McDowell led the Aces scoring with two goals and an assist. Taegan Haynes and Jessica Barton also had a strong game as Haynes scored twice and Barton earned a single and an assist.

The Downie Optimist Midget A Aces travelled to Orillia over the weekend for the Orillia Hawks tournament.  The first game matched the Aces with the host team who edged the Aces 2-1.  Taylor Woodhouse notched the Aces’ only goal by deking out the Orillia defender and placing a hard wrist shot into the mesh.  Kayla Veldman notched the assist.  Orillia scored two power play goals in the second to secure the win.  

Stratford met the Clearview Ice Cats in the second game which appeared to be an even match-up.  Clearview went on the scoreboard early when they were successful with shoving in a rebound.  The Aces had opportunities but could not capitalize on their shots.  Clearview took the game, 1-0.

The Optimist Club of Downie Midget A Aces started the new year off with a tie against the London Devilettes, 3-3. The Aces started the game strong, scoring first with a shot from the point from Shannon Jewitt, assisted by Taylor Woodhouse. London evened the score with a power play goal in the second period. The Aces came back with a pair of goals to make it 3-1, from Taegan Haynes and Alexis Brooks.  Assists were earned by Nicole Marriage and another for Woodhouse. With five mins left on the clock, London came up with two quick goals to tie the game.
