TFS P-BB Bring Home the Silver
Submitted By Mike Rolph on Sunday, February 2, 2020
The Taylor Fluid Systems Aces had a great showing in the London Devilettes tournament this weekend taking home the silver medal after an exciting final game on Sunday afternoon. The first game of the tournament was Friday morning versus Huron Heat. As usual against the Heat, it was an exciting game. Both goalies played an excellent game only letting one goal in each (both of which were backdoor goals) ending the in a 1-1 tie. The only goal scored for the Aces was from Anne Nickel assisted by Josephine Jarmuth.

The second game of the tournament, and of the day, was against the eventual tournament winners, Stoney Creek Sabres. This game ended in a 7-1 victory. Aveleen Flood scored her first within the first minute of the game which rattled the Sabres starting goalie; Flood saw five more points before the game was done. The TFS Aces picked up on the fact that the Sabres goalie was rattled and took full advantage, scoring five more on her before she got pulled and then one more after that on the backup goalie. The goals for the game were scored by Aveleen Flood x2, Lauren Leis, Josephine Jarmuth, Olivia Van Straaten, Katie Helson and Kylie Fifield Assists awarded to Floody x4, Leis x2, Fifield, Van Straaten, Jarmuth, Jessie Horan and Josie Walker. Ava Neumeister played a stellar game in between the pipes only seeing one squeak through.

The third game of the tournament was against the North Halton Twisters. The TFS Aces played this game with aggression and it payed off with a 5-0 victory. Sloan Cameron played a solid game in net shutting down everything the Twisters sent her way. The scoring started late in the first by Paige Campbell.  With an aggressive forecheck she made the goalie, who was trying to play the puck, cough it up for an easy empty netter to get the scoring started. This games goals were scored by Paige Campbell x2, Leis, Jarmuth and Walker each contributing one a piece; assists awarded to Van Straaten, Helson, Horan, Flood, Jarmuth, Nickel, Kara Rolph and Grace Laverty. Off to the Semi Finals!

The Semi Finals saw the Aces battle a familiar opponent, the South Huron Sabres. The Sabres thought they were out of the Tournament on Saturday since the only way they could advance was if the North Halton Twisters lost their last pool play game by a goal differential of five or more - which just so happened to be the case the night before against the Aces. So, the Sabres with a second life were out to prove their worth. Ava Neumeister was between the pipes for this game and was called on early in the first period to keep the Aces in the game and she came through – as usual. The Sabres came out of the gate fast and with aggression but the first blood came from the Aces. Jarmuth would start the scoring off with a nice rush down the ice and a cross the crease move to slide the puck home. Assisted awarded to E. Taylor. The Sabres responded with a goal late in the first to tie the game going in to the second. The second period saw a lot of back and forth play until Horan saw an opening and took the puck from the defensive end into the offensive end, from there she passed the puck to a teammate but stayed with the rush and was rewarded. She got the puck out of the scrum that was beside the net and buried it top cheese for the eventual game winner; assist awarded to Campbell. The third period was a crazy one. The Aces played only four minutes or so at even strength, and out of that there were two five on three penalty kills that the girls fought off and not only that, got a shorty to deflate the Sabres. During the second five on three Jarmuth stole the puck from the Sabres defense and skated the length of the ice to score a nice goal to give the Aces some needed insurance. Later in the third the Sabres pulled their goalie for the extra girl advantage but that did not phase the Aces, Kylie Fifield and Devon Taylor regrouped the puck and passed up to E. Taylor in the neutral zone, she rushed the puck through the neutral zone and shot at the empty net for some added breathing room. The Aces are off to the finals.

The Finals matchup was against the Stoney Creek Sabres. The TFS Aces knew this would not be a repeat of the first time they played them on Friday- they were right. This was a fast-paced fun (stressful for the fans and I’m sure the coaches) game of hockey that showed talent on both sides. Cameron was between the pipes for this game and she played awesome; in fact the whole team played awesome. To put this into perspective as to how well the defense played, they kept the Sabres to only 4 shots in the first, one in the second, three in the third and four in both overtimes. The Sabres struck first near the end of the second period to put the Aces on their heals. Determined not to give up, the Aces kept battling and their hard work payed off, tying the game at the half way point of the third period. Paige Campbell won a battle behind the net and took the puck out to the front into the house; heads up Campbell saw the Sabres goalie was down and there was an opening just above the left pad, she took the shot and hit her target burying the biscuit for the tying goal. The Aces finished regulation time tied 1-1 and on the power play. The first overtime period was a 3 minute 4 on 4, however since the Sabres had a penalty it was 4 on 3 for about a 1:30 but the Aces could not capitalize and the fourth period finished with out a goal. The fifth period, second overtime would be a 3 minute 3 on 3 and much the same as the period prior lots of end to end rushes with the goalies being the stars of the overtime periods. Now we were into a shootout, which is a poor way to decide a hockey game (that’s my opinion). The shootout went to the fifth round where it was decided that the TFS Aces would win the silver medal. Unbeaten to the finals, and then it took five periods plus a shootout to do so.

Well done Aces!!
