Tough Saturdays, Better Sundays
The Stratford Aces Dunny’s PeeWee A team had five games the past two weekends, where they seemed to fair better on Sundays than Saturdays.

On Nov. 25 Lakeshore Lightning was in town for a double header.  The first game started out with a solid first period by both teams, and ended with no goals score.  In the second period the Lightning got the first goal of the game to take the lead.  The Aces tied it up later in the second when Avery found Duke wide open out front.  We thought we were back in it, but the feeling didn’t last as the Lightning scored their second about 1 min. later. This proved to be the winner as the Aces couldn’t find the equalizer in the third before the final buzzer.

The Aces were looking for a split with a win in the second game of the day.  However, this game seemed to be very similar to the first with the Lightning scoring one in the first.  Then the Aces tying it up again, but in the third period, when Avery found Olivia out front this time.  But just the same as in the first game Lakeshore would get their second of the game with about 5 min left in the third.  Try as they might to tie it up again the Aces would fall short by 1 for the second time in the same day.

Sunday Nov. 26 saw the Aces travel to London for their first game against the Minor this season. They got off to a great start with a goal on the first shift when Eve found the net after some great passes from her linemates Sadie and Chan. The Aces would control most of the play in the first, but neither team would score again until the second.  It was London that struck first after a faceoff in the Aces end lead to their first goal.  But not long after the Aces found themselves on top again when Maddog raced down the side and put a hard shot in over the goalies blocker. The send ended 2-1 in favour of the Aces, and the third would see them add one more when Olivia put one in at the side of the net after her two line mates Avery and Duke got her the puck.  The score ended 3-1 for the Aces.

Our next game was in Strathroy on Saturday Dec. 2 against the Bluewater Hawks. Last time the Aces were here we outplayed the Hawks, but had to settle for a 3-3 tie.  So we were looking for a win this time. The game was at 7:45 pm and the girl’s focus seemed to be a little low for this late game.  The Hawks got the first goal of the game and the Aces just couldn’t find the net this night.  As a result the Hawks took the win with a 1-0 score.

On Sunday Dec. 3 the Aces would see the Minors again, but in Stratford this time.  This time the Minors got the scoring started when they scored on a power play in the first period.  It wasn’t until the second when the Aces got rolling.  The first goal was scored by Chan after she got a pass from Sadie behind the goal line.  Chan went across the goal and slipped the puck in on the ice past the goalie.  She followed that up with her second  as she raced down the left side of the ice and let a rocket go finding the top right corner of the net.  The Aces added one more in the second, when Olivia raced down the right side below the face off circle and cut to the net where she found Avery wide open in front.  Avery quickly shot the puck in the net.  In the third the Aces added one more goal to their total when Jack took a shot from the point hitting Olivia as she made her way to the net. As Olivia cross past the goalie the puck followed her and she found herself wide open at the side with the puck, which she quickly tucked in the net.  The final score was 4-1 for the Aces.

The girls are playing some great hockey at times and keeping themselves in all their games. They just need to find away to keep consistently scoring 2 or more every game and they will find they won’t lose many more games if they do.  Remember we don’t need be great until February and beyond, but keep trying to get closer every time you step on the ice!

Good Luck this weekend.
