The PeeWee A Girls Aced it at the Aces Tournament
The Dunny’s Source for Sports PeeWee A Aces played some of their best games of the year last weekend in the Aces Tournament.

On Friday the Aces had 2 games to play. Their first game was against the North Durham Blades.  Right from the drop of the puck it was clear that the Aces were the stronger team, as the play rarely left the Blades end of the ice.  Despite this the first period end with the Aces only up 1-0.  The second was much the same, however the Aces would find the net 4 times this period.  The third period had the same results with another 4 goals to finish off the game out shooting the Blades 39-8 and a 9-0 win for the Aces.

The second game proved to be a little more work for the Aces as they faced the Scarborough Sharks.  The Sharks came out strong and kept the play mostly in the Aces end for the first 5 minutes.  After adjusting to the pace of the game, the Aces started to take more control of the game. But it wasn’t until the 2nd period when the Aces would take the lead with a pair of goals.  They added 3 more in the third to get their second win with a 5-0 score.

Saturday brought another 2 games to play.  Saturday morning the opponent was the Ancaster Avalanche.  The Aces started off well and controlled most of the play, however they found themselves down 1-0 after the first period.  The second period didn’t solve much as it would also end 1-0 in favour of Ancaster.  Try as they might the Aces could not get one past the Ancaster goalie, and although they out shot them 24-8, the Aces lost 1-0.

After regrouping and told to just go out and play as they had been, but this time find the net, the girls were ready to face an unbeaten Burlington Barracudas. That is exactly what they did on their very first shift finding the net early to go up 1-0.  The first period would turn out to be a busy one, as the Aces would score 2 more and the Barracudas would get a power play goal to close out the 1st with a score of 3-1 in favour of the Aces. The Aces added one in the second and held off the Barracudas to end the game with a 4-1 score.

The round robin games ended with 3 teams having a 3 and 1 record, but the Aces would get the top spot with a total of 18 goals for and only 2 against. They would face off against the Sharks again in the semi-finals, and Burlington and Ancaster would face off in the other semi-final game.

The semi-finals against Scarborough would end up exactly the same as the first match up.  The Aces powered their way to another 5-0 victory, putting them in the finals for another game against Burlington, who won their semi-final game in OT.

The Aces knew the game was theirs to win or lose, it would just really come down to whether they could keep up the level of play they had shown all weekend.  The game started off with fairly even play between both teams and would see chances to score traded between each team.  However, the first period would end knotted at 0-0.  The second period wasn’t much different then the third, other than the Aces having a few more chances to score, but still ending in a 0-0 tie.  The third period the Aces came to life and started to put a few more shots on the Barracudas net, and finally with 7 min left the Aces took the lead with the first goal of the game.  Despite coming close once Burlington could not score and 1 goal proved to be enough to win the game and the top spot in the Aces’ PeeWee A Tournament!

The coaching staff were happy and excited for the girls knowing the effort they put forth and the fact that this was the first tournament win ever for some girls on the team.  The forward lines of; Madi Cardno, Meg Feore, Anna Tiganni, Olivia Peters, Avery Nickel, Clara Leduc, Chandler Smith, Eve Greig and Sadie MacArthur along with the defence groupings of; Keira Dietz, Megan Bach, Jacklyn Hettinga, Neave Goris, Clara Schuster and Ashlyn Witt and finally the goalie pair of Kennedy Caldwell and Mia Morris combine for an amazing total of 24 goals for and 2 goals against(including 4 shutouts) over 6 games.  This is just an added plus to a season that has already seen some great things from this awesome group of girls and will continue with more to come.  Congratulation girls you deserve it!
