Orillia Tournament
The Downie Optimist Midget A Aces travelled to Orillia over the weekend for the Orillia Hawks tournament. The first game matched the Aces with the host
team who edged the Aces 2-1. Taylor
Woodhouse notched the Aces’ only goal by deking out the Orillia defender and placing a hard wrist
shot into the mesh. Kayla Veldman
notched the assist. Orillia scored two power play goals in the
second to secure the win.
Stratford
met the Clearview Ice Cats in the second game which appeared to be an even
match-up. Clearview went on the
scoreboard early when they were successful with shoving in a rebound. The Aces had opportunities but could not
capitalize on their shots. Clearview
took the game, 1-0.
The Aces pulled together with a great team effort to secure a victory over the eventual tournament winners, the Timmins Falcons. The Aces' penalty kills were excellent knocking off almost two full minutes of 5-on-3 play. The score was tied at zero entering the third period, until Shannon Jewitt buried a beautiful unassisted wrist shot bar down, to put the Aces up by one. Caroline McDowell ensured the win when she took off on a short-handed breakaway and placed a superb shot top corner. Megan Jackson earned the shut-out. The Aces finished the tournament round-robin play with the best goals for/against average but were unable to qualify for the championship game.
