Goaltenders Shine in Back to Back Shutouts
Flanagan, Russworm Stars of the Show in Weekend Starts
The Rod Smith Financial Atom B Aces Opened their season with a healthy 2 and 0 start downing both the Lambeth Lancers and the Woodstock Wildcats 1-0 this past opening weekend putting a healthy 4 points on the top of the standings of the LLFHL Central West division.
With Reese Flanagan between the pipes at home against the Lancers early Saturday evening the Aces came out poised to start the season on a good foot. Chloe Schultz netted the lone Ace goal in the second after sustained pressure deep in the Lancer end finally bearing fruit for the Aces. The Lancers responded many times throughout as the Lancers penetrated the Ace D on multiple occasions only to have Flanny's stand up performance keep the pucks outs.
Back on the ice on the road Sunday in Woodstock the Aces faced the Wildcats. Great digging in front front the Ace offence resulted in a ground out goal from Charlee Macfarlane. Claire Donnelly and Pippa Nyenhuis held the line at the back. The Ace coaching staff were encouraged with end to end play from other D's Adele Helson and Lilly Hartwick taking the puck and going with it using all the ice in front of them. Macie Russworm was strong in net and wasn’t letting anything in. She flew from side to side and froze any and all pucks that came at her including backstopping Wildcat breakaways to preserve the Aces second win of the season in as many games.
The Aces rematch against the Lancers Saturday at the RBC while going back on the road to Blyth Sunday to face the ever dangerous Huron Heat.
