Missed Sunday by that much...
The Stratford Cooper Standard Bantam B Aces competed in the 34th Annual Walter Gretzky Tournament in Brantford this past weekend.

In Friday’s opening game, Ancaster got out to a 1 to 0 lead before game MVP Abby Debus scored a pair of goals. Rachel Nash and Sam McLeod collected the assists on the Debus goals. Ancaster tied the game at 2’s later in the third. That early lead would come back to bite the Aces later in the weekend. The game ended in a 2 – 2 draw.

Friday afternoon’s game was another 2 to 2 tie, this time against the Hamilton Hawks. Jenna Bouwman put the Aces on the board first assisted by Debus. Joanna Van De Walle added to the Aces lead with an unassisted goal later in the first. Hamilton scored their goals late in the first and early in the second to tie things up. Game MVP Kate Schneider played a strong game at both ends of the ice.

On Saturday morning the Aces defeated the Norfolk HERicanes 2- 0. Tarha Keen scored the game winner on a strong wrist shot from just inside the blue line in the first period. Game MVP Madi McKinley found the “5 hole” to add an insurance marker late in the game. Goaltender Sommer English recorded the shutout.

Stratford’s record of 1 win and 2 ties in pool play was matched by both Hamilton and Ancaster with only the top two teams moving on to play on Sunday. Hamilton took first place in the pool by having fewer goals against. With Stratford and Ancaster tied in goals for and goals against, the tie-breaker came down to who scored first in their head-to-head game.
