NotesSome awesome forechecking, some great saves and some hardworking defencemen helped the Sommers Generator Systems Peewee A team cruise to a gold medal in Cambridge this weekend. They started their quest Friday morning against the hometown favourites, Cambridge Roadrunners. The girls were up 2-1 after two periods and went on to lead 3-1 into the third. However, in the last two minutes, the Aces ran into penalty trouble allowing Cambridge to score two quick goals and tie the game. Goal scorers were Alexis, Kiara and Sadie with Hailey(2), Sadie and Ashlyn earning assists.
After that disappointing ending, thanks to some questionable calls, the girls regrouped and never looked back. They went on to play Sudbury Friday afternoon and won that game 5-0. It was a definite team effort as there were 5 different goal scorers, Kiara, Lauren, Hailey, Clara and Alexis. Assists going to Haddie(2), Shauna, Sadie and Hannah. Mia recorded the shut out.
On Saturday, the girls faced an unfamiliar team in the Kanata Rangers. The girls skated away with a 2-1 win on a nice breakaway goal by Kiara, assisted by Sadie. The second goal was scored by Hailey when she banged in Sadie’s shot on a rebound. Another win for the Aces!
The Saturday afternoon opponent was another unfamiliar team, the Waterloo Ravens. This game proved to be a frustrating one for our Aces as we spent the majority of the game circling their net, hitting the goalie’s big pads and the target on her belly! Finally with 55 seconds left in the game Alexis sent a pass over to Sadie who buried the puck into the back of the net for the win!! A huge sigh of relief could be heard from across the ice as all of the moms finally relaxed! Mia was solid in net and recorded the shut out. On to the semi-final in the morning!!
Early Sunday morning the girls were excited to meet up with the Kanata Rangers once again! They came to the rink a little wary as they knew it was not always good to have to play a team again after you had defeated them during the round robin! However, the girls paid no attention to superstition and ended up winning the game 5-1! Another team effort all around as five different girls put the puck into the net! Sadie, Haddie, Kiara, Ella, and Hailey scored with assists going to Dayna and Hannah. Carley recorded the win in net with some great saves!
On to the final game for the gold medal! It turned out that we had to play the first team we met in the tournament, the Cambridge Roadrunners! There was no way the girls were going to end this game with a tie! The Aces struck first as Ashlyn smacked Kiara’s pass into the back of the net. The girls went up 2-0 when Sadie passed it out to Shauna on the point and she fired it passed the goalie! Into the third, the girls were leading until the final few minutes when Cambridge scored. With only 1 minute left, and Cambridge on the power play, along with a pulled goalie, the girls held on and Clara sealed the deal with an empty net goal! The gold medal 🥇belonged to the Aces!! This was a total team effort as the girls skated so hard every game and our goalies, Mia and Carley were awesome, as usual! A shout out to our forward lines of Lauren, Kiara, Ashlyn, Sadie, Hailey, Alexis, Haddie, Ella and Clara for some amazing forechecking! They kept that puck deep in the opponents end every single game!! And also a shout out to our defensive pairs of Katie, Olivia, Hannah, Dayna, Ashley and Shauna who stood their ground and worked hard to get that puck out of our end!! This gold medal is a great sign of things to come as we head into playoffs and toward Provincials! Let’s go Aces!!
