NotesThe Stratford Kinsmen Intermediate Aces recorded a win and their first loss in KW Local League action this weekend, beating the Cambridge Roadrunners 3-1 at the Hespeler arena on Friday night, and losing 2-1 against first-place Waterloo on Sunday in their home opener at the Dufferin arena.
In Friday night's action, Cambridge opened the scoring halfway through the first period and held the lead until 2:51 in the frame when Kaitlyn Burr, pinching deep from the blueline worked the puck loose and got in front of the net to tie the game at one apiece.
Assisting on the play were Brooke Billings and Kiersten Steven. The score remained tied until 8:28 of the third when Nichelle Brodhagen went end-to-end, beating a sprawling Cambridge netminder to put the Aces in the lead. Stratford's insurance goal came with only 38 seconds left on the clock, as Brodhagen connected on a pass from Sarah Beluzic.
In Sunday's home opener, the Intermediate Aces faced first-placed Waterloo Ravens. After a scoreless opening period, Waterloo opened the scoring with a goal at 9:40 of the second. Pushing for a second goal, the Ravens had a number of shots on Aces netminder Alexa Groenestege, who managed to hold the fort until the buzzer sounded the end of the frame. The third period saw a number of chances for both squads, including two power plays for the Aces.
Waterloo scored at 6:58 from a Stratford turnover, putting the Aces at a two goal deficit.
It wasn't until 1:26 of the third, when Stratford centre Brodhagen tipped in a point shot from Brooke Billings, assisted by Shayna Kropf.
This proved to be the Aces only goal, giving them their first loss of the 2012/13 KW Local League season.
