PeeWee BB Aces win Gold in Burlington
Submitted By kgilchrist on Monday, March 10, 2014
The Dunnys Source for Sports PeeWee BB Aces brought home the gold medal from Burlington this past weekend.

The Aces started the tournament off with a game Friday afternoon against the host Burlington Barracudas. Both teams came out strong and the first period ended scoreless. Abby Gilchrist scored the Aces first goal off a beautiful pass from Madison Smith. The Barracudas quickly tied things up before the second period ended. Burlington went ahead early in the third period but then Gilchrist netted her second of the game to tie things up again. The Barracudas scored late in the third, but McKenzie Dietrich fired in the Aces third goal with only 17 seconds left in the game which ended in a 3-3 tie. Sara Campbell and Amber Van Nes played strong defense through the entire game.

Game 2 was an early Sat morning game, but despite some penalty trouble, the Aces came out on top of the Stoney Creek Sabres winning the game 2-0. Jessica Blowes and Brooklyn Rau scored for the Aces, with helpers from Mikayla Flanagan and Neely Clarke. Emma Gansevles and Sophie Bogden held the blue line helping goalie Ella Wouters record the shut out.

Game 3 was played Sat afternoon, against a strong Central New York team. Once again, the Aces came up against some penalty trouble, but were able to kill them all off and come out on top winning the game 3-0. Madison Smith, Rau, and Gilchrist scored for Stratford assisted by Flanagan and Clarke. Megan Arnold recorded the shut out for the Aces

The Aces played a third game Saturday night and came out on top of the Amherst Lady Knights, another US team winning 4-0. Madison Smith recorded a hat trick in the game, and Lily Daum added one of her own assisted by Stacey Shackelton. This game secured their spot in the tournament final Sunday afternoon. Wouters added her second shut out of the tournament.

The final game had the Aces meeting up against the tournament hosts once again. The Aces notched the first goal from Brooklyn Rau early in the first period. The second and third period went scoreless, until the Barracudas pulled their goalie and popped in the tying goal with 7 seconds left on the clock. The first overtime period was played 5 on 5, but despite many chances for both teams, neither was able to score. Kaeley Dunsieth and Tahra Keen made a number of key plays in the defensive end, to keep the Barracudas off the scoreboard. The second overtime period was played with only 3 skaters per side, and with lots of open ice, made for an exciting final 5 minutes of play. With only 34 seconds left on the clock, the Aces Jessica Blowes fired in the game winning and tournament winning goal giving the Aces the gold medal.

Congratulations Aces!
