Aces Split Wild Weekend
The Romeo Optometry U-11 B Aces split a pair of weekend games with the Woolwich Wild. Saturday saw the Aces travel to Woolwich and hand the home team a 2-1 loss. On Sunday the Wild returned the favor squeaking out a 3-2 win in front of the Aces home crowd.

Saturdays morning tilt with the Wild started with some new line combinations for the Aces. With the teams 2nd year veteran Annie Thompson still unavailable due to illness Elliot Berg was moved back to bolster the Aces defense. Berg and rookie defense Brooklyn Beattie were paired with the experienced Natalie Helson and Katie Price to create a balanced defensive look. Up front newly converted winger Shay Williams skated on the right side and made a number of nice plays as she gains experience as a forward. The Aces fell behind early in the 2nd but responded quickly when Avyn Porter potted a rebound off the hard work of Ally Chadwick and Aubrie Smith. The Aces kept the pressure on and Grey Duchesne converted on a nice rush to give the Aces the lead 2-1. Beattie earned the lone assist after her crisp pass in the neutral zone sent Duchesne in for the eventual game winner.
Sundays rematch was at the Rotary Complex with the Romeo Optometry team looking for the 2nd win to complete the weekend sweep. Alexandra McKay got the home team on the board early in the 1st with a great goal to open the scoring. The confident Aces were quickly reminded that the game was far from over as the Wild responded just 9 seconds later to tie the game at one. The 2nd period saw the Aces fall behind 3-1. Despite numerous opportunities and lots of offensive zone time the Aces could not find the back of the net.
The 3rd period started just like the first when an determined McKay carried the puck in the Woolwich zone and found a streaking Porter who danced around a Wild defender and snapped her 2nd goal of the weekend to make it a 3-2 game. The Aces kept Woolwich on their heels for most of the 3rd. Madeleine Nickel with her freshly trimmed stick helped generate offensive zone time and also provided strong back pressure when the Wild did manage to escape their defensive zone. Even with Adeline Rae pulled for the extra attacker for more than a minute the Aces were unable to tie it up. Final score was 3-2 for the Wild and a weekend split between the two teams.
The Aces will practice once this week to prepare for a weekend tournament in South Huron.
