A Silver Weekend in Toronto The Sommers Generator Systems Peewee A team spent the weekend navigating big city traffic as they participated in the “March Break Madness” tournament in Toronto. The girls played in 5 different arenas and skated away with 2 wins, 2 ties, 1 loss and a silver medal!🥈 The tournament started against the eventual gold medalists, North Halton Twisters. These two teams are very evenly matched and it was a battle that ended in a tie, 1-1. Clara scored our only goal on breakaway! Back to the hotel for some chicken fingers at the bar, a swim in the pool and an early curfew. Saturday morning at 8, the girls faced the first of two Toronto Leaside teams. The ice was small and somewhat frustrating as the girls found it hard to gain any momentum! We outshot the other team but still ended with a 1-1 tie. Hailey scored our only goal, assisted by Shauna. The second game on Saturday saw us face the second Toronto Leaside team. Again, we outshot this team too and spent a lot of the game in their end. The girls were up 2-0 in the middle of the second before Toronto got on the board with two quick goals to tie it up. Ashley and Ashlyn scored the goals with assists going to Hailey and Haddie. Into the third, with three minutes left to play, Ashley potted her second of the game, assisted by Sadie. The girls held on to win 3-2. This win, along with two ties helped to secure second spot and a ticket to the semis on Sunday morning. On Sunday morning, the Aces once again had to play one of the Toronto Leaside teams to get to the gold medal game. Sadie scored in the first, assisted by Ashley. Leaside tied it up in the second. After two periods we were tied 1-1. The third period was going to determine who was going to move on! There was a lot of action back and forth, with Mia making some good saves! Finally with 3 min left, Lauren batted the puck to Sadie who sent a pass out to Kiara who made no mistake and fired it past the goalie! With two minutes left, our Aces got a penalty and we were in for a stressful end to the game! With 6 on 4, a pulled goalie and a mad scramble in front of our net, Kiara somehow got her stick on the puck and send it down the ice. With a little help from their defenceman, the puck floated in to seal the deal!!! The game ended and the Aces were heading to the gold medal game! A Booster Juice break was in order and then we headed to our fifth and final arena of the weekend. The girls were facing those North Halton Twisters once again. Right from the puck drop we knew the girls were in for a battle! The Twisters are fast and physical! The Aces spent quite a bit of time in the Twister end during the first period but failed to beat their solid goalie. In our end, Carly was standing on her head, doing everything she could to keep the puck out! However, in the middle of the second period, another mad scramble in front of our net resulted in a goal for the Twisters. Our Aces battled hard for the rest of the game but just couldn’t put the puck in. A silver medal🥈 is still something to be proud of! The girls skated hard all weekend and again, proved they can compete with top teams. Now it is back to work as the Aces look forward to starting the 3rd round of playoffs against Lakeshore. Go Aces go!!
