Dunnys Source for Sports Aces Win Pair on Weekend
The Dunny’s Source for Sports Atom C Stratford Aces travelled to Sarnia on Saturday to face off against the Sarnia Lady Sting.

The girls had their best game of the season to date, dispatching the Lady Sting 3-1. Coach Darcy had nothing but superlative comments post game.  According to Darcy, “The girls put forth their best team effort, best defence, best forechecking and best skating.  The wingers were in position and creating chances”. The Aces got off to a lightning fast start, when Katie Wheal banged home a rebound just 17 seconds into the game.  Minutes later, Brinlee Wall was alone in front of the net and fired a hard shot on the Sarnia goalie.  Midway through the period, Wheal found a streaking Paige Taylor, who took Wheal’s pass on a breakaway and scored on the Lady Sting netminder to put the Aces up 2-0.  Piper Broughton had a strong first period, the Aces were playing well offensively, creating chances, with all lines contributing, and breakouts in particular working really well. Sarnia had called up a pint sized, dynamo of a player from Novice for the game.  This was the only Sarnia player to create any offense against the solid defence of the Aces.  Goalie Peyton Boyles-Keating was able to stop her once on a breakaway, but she ultimately succeeded in scoring the only goal of the game for the Lady Sting, to make it 2-1 for the Aces. Later in the second, Krista McMahon broke out down the right side of the ice, cut to the net and scored to make it 3-1 Aces.  Adele Helson and Rachel Barber both played a great game on D, each coming up with two big stops on the Lady Sting.  Final Score 3-1, Aces.
Sunday’s game featured a match-up of the top two defensive teams in the division.  The Aces played host to the Huron Heat.  The Heat had not yet surrendered a goal through the first four games of the opening segment. It was a cagey affair, with little to report through the first two periods.  In an effort to create some offence, the Heat tried sitting two offensive players in the neutral zone, behind the defensive pairings of the Aces, while the Aces were in the offensive zone.  This strategy lead to one good chance, but an excellent back-check from Helson stopped the play dead before the Heat reached the Aces blue line. The Aces had much more spark in the third.  Cassie Richardson lead a rush out of the defensive zone, broke behind two Heat defenders and scored her first ever goal as an Ace!  The assists went to Krista McMahon and Peyton Barclay.  With two minutes left in the third, the Heat pulled their goalie in an effort to tie the game.  With less than 20 seconds to go, the Heat hit the post and with a wide open net and a Heat player ready to bang in the rebound, Boyles-Keating made another save for the highlight reel, reaching back to smother the puck, earning the shutout.  Final score 1-0, Aces.
