Aces Outshine Meteors
The Dunny’s Source for Sports Atom C Stratford Aces opened their 2018-2019 WOGHL season on the road in Mitchell against the always tough Mitchell Meteors.

According to Coach Darcy, the well rested Aces had spent the previous  10 days focusing on skating, specifically edge work, to help improve their speed and balance. Goaltender Peyton Boyles-Keating was steady in net right from the start against an aggressive forechecking Meteors lineup.  A defensive breakout led by the defensive pairing of Maeve Moss and Peyton Barclay sprung Katelyn McMahon on a breakaway midway through the first.  Katelyn wasted little time burying one past the Meteors netminder to give the Aces a 1-0 lead. Minutes later Krista McMahon broke out of the defensive zone on her own and finished with a nice deke to score on her backhand and put the Aces up 2-0.  This was Krista’s first regular season goal as an Ace! The Aces took a penalty late in the first.  On the ensuing penalty kill, Rachel Barber made a great defensive play on a Meteors forward.   With the Meteors’ power play starting to click, they were able to feed a streaking Mitchell forward who was able to snap a goal into the top corner and cut the lead in half.  Aces up 2-1. Late in the period, Boyles-Keating made her best save of the season, a terrific glove save, to preserve the Aces lead heading into the second period after a frantic first.
In the second and third periods, the Aces continued execute their defensive zone breakouts, leading to multiple breakaways.  Unfortunately the Aces couldn’t beat the Meteors’ goalie to give them a two goal cushion.  With 30 seconds left on the clock, the Aces were called for a penalty in their own zone.  With the Meteors goalie pulled, time seemed to stand still, but the extra few seconds were all for naught as the Aces closed out the win.  Final score 2-1, Aces
