Perth Auto Dismantlers Atom A Aces Head To Provincials - Take 2
It was uphill all the way, but the Perth Auto Dismantlers Atom A girls made it through the round robin play-down series to advance to the Provincial Playoffs on April 5,6, and 7. Playing against eternal rivals, Huron Heat and Saugeen Maitland Lightening, the girls took to the ice for a lengthy series, that I’ve also dubbed, the Arctic Arena series. Here’s how it all shook down.

Game 1 – Feb 22 Huron Heat

Arctic Arena #1 – Seaforth

In game one of the play-down series, the girls saw the Heat attempt to bring their aggressive brand of hockey, but it wasn’t enough to do anything but fuel the girls on this cold Friday night.

With goaltender, Grace Kipfer in net, the girls fought off the Heat over and over and over again to record the first win of the series, 2-0, giving Kipfer the well-deserved shut-out.

Goals were scored in the second period, by Ella Taylor, on an assist from defenseman, Emma Van Nes and by Eve Binns, assisted by both Avery Randall and Emersyn Miller.

Game 2 – Feb 24 against Saugeen Maitland

Going into the series as the underdogs, no one really knew how we would perform against the Lightening, but no one expected to see the grit and determination that the girls brought to the ice in game 2 of the play-down series.

Playing at home on a snowy Sunday, the girls took the Lightening to church, Aces style. Praying for a win, with goaltender, Sloan Cameron in net, the first period saw nothing but a continuation of the post-season team we always knew they could be. When they played as a unit with a single goal, they are unstoppable.

The Aces single goal would come from winger, Lila Mortimer, on a text book pass from the edge by centre, Emersyn Miller, when she took that new, extra-long, extra-curved stick and shot it past the Lightening goalie to take the lead.

The Lightening would manage to get one lone goal past stellar goaltender, Cameron, but no others, to settle the game at a tie, 1-1.

Game 3 – Feb 28 – Saugeen Maitland

Arctic Arena #2 - Minto

Heading up to the land the GPS mapping team forgot about, Minto Township, the girls starred in their own version of Groundhog day as they faced the Lightening for the second time that week…in another arctic arena, made all the warmer, by the pissed off screaming Lightening parents and some questionable, warm fuzzy vibes from near-sighted comedy duo, aka, the refs.

The stakes were getting higher and both teams could see the end, but they had to get past one another to get there.

Remember my reference to Groundhog Day? The game ended in a 1-1 tie, with the lone goal scored by Emersyn Miller, on a pass from the edge from…Lila Mortimer. With another incredible goaltending performance by Grace Kipfer to hold the game at the tie.

I’d like to pause a moment to raise a glass to the post-season goaltending by both Cameron and Kipfer. Seriously ladies, your ability to hold the opposing team at bay has been nothing short of incredible. Congrats.

It was now on to what would be the final game in the series. On March 2, against the Heat, on home ice, the girls, with Cameron back in net, decidedly won the game that would take them to the tournament with the best hoodies around, Provincials.

There would only be one goal scored, by Emersyn Miller from winger, Paige Campbell, but that would be all that was needed to win, as Cameron was able to record the shut-out. The Aces were the first team to 6 points and are now headed to the Provincial tournament.

Congrats girls on performing a classic underdog win!
