The Aces PeeWee A go for a Second Tournament Win in Guelph
The Dunny’s Source for Sports PeeWee A Aces travelled to Guelph last weekend for the Guelph Winter Classic Tournament.  The Aces were getting a chance to play 3 new teams in this tournament, the first of which was the Cambridge Roadrunners.  The Aces hit the ice at 12:15 on Friday down 2 players.  Madi Cardno and Ashlyn Witt were enjoying the sun in Florida and wouldn’t be with the girls this weekend.  This first game proved to be a fairly even affair as both teams traded chances to score throughout the first two periods.  However, the score remained 0-0 heading into the third period.  Finally, after some great chances the Aces found the net after Chandler Smith deflected a shot from Jacklyn Hettinga .  Chandler would find an empty net for her second of the period, after the Roadrunners pulled their goalie late in the game.  The final score was 2-0 for the Aces, with Mia Morris having a solid game in net for the shutout.
The next game at 5:00 on Friday was against the Chicago Fury.  We weren’t sure what to expect from this US team, but quickly learned we were the stronger team as we controlled most of the play in their end for the first period.  The problem was getting the puck past their goalie.  She would stop all shots that came her way in the first two periods.  We told the girls to keep working, and once they got 1 goal more were sure to follow.  The first goal finally came at what seemed the most unlikely time.  We were trying to get kill off penalties playing 2 players short, when the puck was shot down the ice.  Meg Feore decided to race down the ice to be the first to it, and she was. While battling with 2 Fury players the puck was cleared up the middle of the ice to the blue line where Keira Dietz was waiting and made her way in for a shot.  Just as the puck got to the goalie, Feore tipped the puck over the goalie and into the net. That is just what the Aces needed, and they followed it up with 2 more before the end of the game. Both goals were scored by Olivia Peters, one after a battle in front that saw Sadie MacArthur shoot on the goalie and Olivia putting in the rebound.  The other was a solo effort where Olivia walked through the defence and moved in close to put one high past the goalie.  The final score was 3-0, and with 37-6 shots on net in favour of the Aces, Kennedy Caldwell wasn’t that busy in net, but kept the goals against at 0 in the tournament so far.
Saturday morning brought our third opponent, the home team Guelph Gryphons. The battle began as both teams tried to feel the other out.  The Aces thought they had opened the scoring, when the puck made its way across the Gryphon’s goal line.  However, the ref called it off saying he blew the whistle before it crossed the line, and the first ended tied at 0-0.  The second saw some penalties for both teams, but the first goal came during even strength, when Clara Schuster put a shot on net and Sadie deflected it passed the goalie. The second period also saw us lose a player to the flu.  Try as she might Olivia did not have enough energy to play any longer.  It was a hard decision to stop her playing, but one we had to make.  In the third period we worked to extend the lead, which didn’t occur until the final minute of play when Neave Goris and Clara Leduc got the puck to Jacklyn who put it in an empty net.  The final score was 2-0 for the Aces as Mia Morris kept the shutout alive.
The 3 wins had the Aces in first place after the round robin games, and meant we would face the Fury again in the semi-finals Saturday night.  The game proved to be very similar to the first one against the Fury. A lot of chances for the Aces, but no goals until halfway through the second when Clara L. passed to a streaking Avery Nickel up the middle.  Avery raced in on a break away and fired a shot past the goalie.  Jacklyn added a second one in the third in a solo effort with the puck, and Sadie would put in our last one after a pass from Megan Bach.  The final tally was again 3-0, as Kennedy had a fairly easy job keeping the team shut out alive.
The finals was on Sunday morning against Cambridge, who had beat Guelph in the other semi-finals game. The girls were ready to give it their best as they hit the ice.  Again, the first period was the same as all the others for us in the tournament, as there were no goals scored.  The Aces were the first on the board in the second after Meg Feore and Anna Tiganni found Eve Greig in front of the net to bang one in.  Cambridge tied it up not long after, when a rolling puck was batted by Kennedy in net.  It didn’t stayed tied for long as just over a minute later Clara S. put a shot on net, and Anna pushed the rebound over to Meg, who put it in the net. The third started with the Aces up 2-1.  The hope to keep the lead didn’t last long as 2 min in Cambridge got a breakaway and put one in the net. The third ended tied at 2 a piece.  The first 5 minutes of 4 on 4 overtime didn’t solve anything, so we went for another 5 minutes of 3 on 3.  After the buzzer the game remained tied, which meant a shootout would be needed to settle this game.  Both first shooters couldn’t put one past the goalies. The second shooter for the Aces was Megan Bach and she put one high blocker side past the Cambridge goalie.  The next Cambridge player tried the same move but the post was a close as she would come to scoring. The last two shooters for both teams couldn’t score either, and Bach’s goal proved to be the winner of the game and the tournament!
We are very proud of all the girls and their work and effort put into every game.  This makes two tournament wins for the Dunny’s Source for Sports PeeWee A Aces, after they first won their hometown tournament in November.  We are looking forward to having all the girls back together for a strong finish to the regular season.  Then we will see what we will do in the playoffs.  Well done girls and be proud of your efforts!
