Aces Win Silver At The London Devilettes Tournament
Last weekend the Sommers Generator Systems Atom A Aces competed in the London Devilettes hockey tournament against many of the top Atom A teams in Southwestern Ontario and the GTA. The Aces flexed their muscles and proved to all that they are definitely a force to be reckoned with throughout the league. Stratford played exceptionally great hockey all weekend long, only giving up 3 goals in 5 games, and they brought home the silver medal.

The Aces kicked off the tournament on Friday, taking on an opponent they have never played against, the Whitby Wolves. Stratford’s “nose to the grind” work ethic really paid off as they controlled the majority of the play, scoring a goal in the first and putting the nail in the coffin in the third to down the Wolves 2-0.

Saturday morning was very early start for the Aces as their next opponent was the Etobicoke Dolphins for a 7:30 am puck drop. The Stratford team arrived in London bright and early to find that the arena was not yet opened so they decided to pile into a vehicle and blast the music in an attempt to wake up the arena manager who may or may not have been sleeping in his or her car. Well folks…. It worked!! The manager opened the arena, the Aces Rocked their way onto the ice, and Rolled over the Dolphins to a 4-0 win. Superfan Jamie Gethke, was unable to be at the game, but was quoted in a phone interview, “A little R&R is good for Aces”.

After a hearty breakfast the Aces got right back in their groove, this time against the Oshawa Lady Generals. This afternoon matinee was a major defensive battle with both teams showing moments of greatness. Speaking of greatness, the GREAT ONE himself once said “you miss 100% of the shot that you don’t take.” The Aces put those words of wisdom to the test and it almost seemed like they were missing the net on 100% of the shots they did take until they broke the game open late in the third to steal the game away from the Lady Generals 1-0 and complete the round robin undefeated and in first place without having a single goal scored against them.

The mighty Aces were taking the tournament by force and they earned a buy straight to the semi finals on Sunday morning. Their opponent ………… the Wilmot Wolverines! The Wolverines finished the regular season without a single loss and have not lost in tournament play before London.  They are a familiar foe to the Aces but the team was not showing any sign of weakness.  The first period was exciting with aggressive forechecking, solid defense, and some highlight reel goals but the pesky Wolverines kept the score tied at 2.  The second period Stratford picked their game up a few more notches and scored the go ahead goal. Holding onto the lead in the third, the Aces took a couple of questionable penaltys with under 2 minutes left in the game and found themselves shorthanded. To make matters worse, Wilmot pulled their goalie to make it 6 on 3. Stratford survived the “ground and pound” that the Wolverines were laying on them and they busted loose to score into the empty net to finish off the Wilmot Wolverines 4-2 and sending them home. Following the game there were reports of Wolverine sightings, scratching their heads as they travelled the snow covered roads home.

Sunday afternoon the Sommers Generator Systems Atom A Aces were playing in the finals against the Niagara Falls Rapids. The Aces played hard, working their magic up and down the ice controlling all aspects of the game. Stratford was dominant the entire game but could not find a way to put the puck in the back of the net, losing a heartbreaker to the Rapids 1-0.

The Stratford Aces played amazing hockey all weekend long showing fantastic class on and off the ice and brought home the silver medals. The curse of the silver medal continues, and the Aces players and coaching staff are going right back to work in order to put this darn curse to bed once and for all.

Congratulations on a successful weekend ladies. Parents and coaches are so proud of all of you for your relentless work ethic and your “never give up” attitudes. KEEP IT UP ACES!!!!!
