Last weekend the Sommers Generator Systems Atom A Aces collected
another four points playing smoking hot hockey in front of their hometown crowd
Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
The action all got started Friday night when the Kitchener
Lady Rangers came to town looking for some serious revenge from the last game
before Christmas. In that previous game
Kitchener stormed to a 3-0 lead after two periods of play… and then the fun
began. Their head coach removed his parka in between the second and third
periods to reveal his ugly (but quite flashy) Christmas sweater. As he paced up
and down the bench he watched the Aces play excel and he knew right away that
said sweater was not sitting well with the Stratford athletes. The Aces
dominated the third period with four unanswered
goals to steal the game away and let me tell ya folks, you have never
before saw a man put a parka back on that quickly. EVER.

Anyway, back to Friday night’s game. The Lady Rangers started by setting a fast
pace catching Stratford off guard
shooting the lights out with aggressive play but were unable to solve the hot
goaltending of Grace Kipfer and the first period remained scoreless. Kitchener
drew first blood in the second but the Aces responded early in the third when
Ella Boersma sprung Aveleen Flood down the ice with a breakout pass. As Floody
dangled with some magical moves in the offensive zone, she found Victoria
Campbell high in the slot. Campbell took one look up and saw the top corner
staring at her and buried the biscuit with authority. The game remained tied up until late in the
third when Olivia Cote-Wawryszyn hit Tessa Burdett with a nice breakout
pass. Burdett was checked in the neutral
zone and dumped the puck deep into the offensive zone. Burdie put her foot on
the gas and beat the Kitchener defense to the puck setting up Kenleigh Soper in
the slot from behind the net. Soper made no mistake and found the back of the
net with 10 seconds remaining to once again, steal the game away from the Lady
Rangers.
Saturday afternoon Guelph Jr Gryphons came to town and this
time it was the Aces looking for some redemption from back in December when
Guelph knocked them out of the Jr Gryphon tournament in the quarter
finals. The Aces opened the game with a
goal in the first period from once again, Kenleigh Soper with the assist coming
from Rylee Nethercott. Guelph answered with one of their own with a goal late
in the period. Mid-way through the second period the Aces found the back of the
net when Soper and Nethercott set up Victoria Campbell to snipe and take the lead. Early in the third
period Ella Boersma saucered a breakout pass to Tessa Burdett who beat the Guelph
defense wide to cut in and completely turn the goalie inside out with a dirty
deke to open the flood gates. Two minutes later Olivia VanStraaten and Campbell
set up Olivia Rau at the faceoff dot and Rau rocketed a shot through the goalie’s
five-hole. Burdett threw a little salt on the wound with sick wrap-a-round in
the last minute of the game and the Aces defeated the Jr Gryphons 5-1.
The Aces certainly kicked off the new year in fine form at
home! Way to go ladies!
