Heartbreaking OT Loss Sends Aces Home From Gryphon Tournament
This past weekend the Sommers Generator Systems Atom A Aces played in the Guelph Gryphon’s hockey tournament. The Aces played extremely well in every game but once again the “hockey gods” were not in Stratford’s favour as they suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss in the quarter finals to the host team.

The action got started Friday morning with Stratford taking on the Niagara Falls Rapids. The Aces took to the ice in regular fashion and were controlling the majority of the first period opening up the scoring mid-way through. The game remained 1-0 with Stratford in full control when half way through the third Niagara caught a lucky break tying the game up with a short handed goal. The Rapids would get another lucky break a few minutes later and got a bounce that lead to a screen shot for the game winning goal. Although it was a tough loss, Stratford Aces were playing great hockey and the coaches wasted no time getting the girls fired up for game two against the Kitchener Lady Rangers Friday afternoon.

The Aces took to the ice as if they were on a mission, warming up as if they were all receiving a Conner McDavid salary. By the very first puck drop, the fans had a buzz about them as if they already knew the Lady Rangers had something coming that they would not be able to handle. Stratford played a “ground and pound” style netting two goals in the first period, three goals in the second, and two more in the third to a 7-1 victory.

Saturday morning the Aces went right back to work  to battle it out with the Sudbury Lady Wolves at the Exhibition arena. Sudbury was a big team and they were playing on a small ice pad so the Aces had to be very tactical. The first period saw both teams moving the puck well but Stratford broke through the thick Sudbury ice with six seconds left to take the lead. The Aces didn’t look back as they followed up with two more in the third. The Lady Wolves had some key chances but were not able to penetrate the wall that goaltender Ella Gracey had built around her net. Sudbury fell to the Aces 3-0 with Gracey picking up the shutout to put Stratford into the quarter finals in the afternoon.

Saturday afternoon’s quarter finals were all set with the Aces lined up against the home team, Guelph Gryphons. Once again Stratford dominated Guelph the majority of the game, up and down the ice, but were unable to find the back of the net and the game remained scoreless after 3 periods of regulation play. The Gryphons broke the stalemate to deliver a heart breaking loss to the Aces in overtime that would unfortunately end their weekend.

Overall the Sommers Generator Systems Atom A Aces carried themselves in a fantastic manner all weekend long showing their fans that they can play amazing hockey and are definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in the games to come.
