Peewee BB Aces "light the fire" at Fire on Ice!
This past weekend the All Equip Repair and Service Peewee BB Aces travelled to Rochester, NY to compete in the Fire On Ice Tournament.

An exciting weekend of playing both teams from Canada and the United States the girls were fired up and ready to go for game one versus Toronto Leaside Wildcats. This game was a learning curve for the girls. Getting used to the ins and outs of the USA hockey rules such as no delayed offsides and not being able to stand in the crease. Despite the change in the rules, the girls moved the puck well and caught on very quick. Scoring an early goal in the first period putting them on the board 1-0 over the Wildcats. The Wildcats tied up the game at the end on the second period. With the Aces in the box during the third period the Wildcats managed to sneak one by goaltender Lott on a power play. With three minutes left in the third the Aces pulled Lott and with a strong attempt to keep the puck in the offensive zone the Wildcats managed to break it out and score an empty netter. Our Aces fought a tough battle.

Game two versus Erie Lady Lions was an exciting battle for the Aces.  The girls had a 7 hour gap between games resulting in a bit of a slow start in the first period. Once, the Aces lit the fire they had no problem putting one in the back of the net, then a second, a third, fourth and fifth goal! The girls kept the puck play in the Lady Lions zone the majority of the game with strong break outs of the Aces zone and smooth re-group progressions in the neutral zone back into the Lady Lions zone. Goaltender Courtney “The Price is Right” Lott held her own and stopped anything that came her way. Lott also made some slick plays to the puck in the Aces zone to keep the game moving and was a wall between the pipes. When the third buzzer sounded the girls were quick to celebrate their first big W of the season!

Game 3 versus the Syracuse Nationals was a nail biter. The Aces managed to net 2 quick ones past the Nationals goalie, resulting in a 2-0 lead. In the second period with about 5 minutes of a defensive breakdown the Nationals managed to sneak two past Lott and tied up the game. Going into the third it was an even playing field as the scoreboard read 2-2.  The Nationals managed to net another one which meant the Aces were down 3-2. The Aces battled hard and grinded out the game. With 4 minutes left they pulled Lott from the net and set out on a mission with a 6 girl offensive team. After a quick shift change from the first line of Gibb , Smith , Krantz , Chartrand, Hettinga and Schuster the second line of Nickel, Tigani, Feore , Harding, Ramseyer and Hodgson managed to keep it in the Nationals zone. Aces Avery Nickel sniped one top cheddar on the Nationals goalie resulting in a HUGE comeback for the Aces. The Aces managed to play out the last two minutes and keep the game at a 3-3 tie.

Going into game 4 the Aces finished by placing in the number 4 position of the 12U A/B division for pool play, with a record of 1-1-1 this meant they would see the number 5 position team in the quarter finals. The Aces faced off again vs. The Syracuse Nationals for round two. Another hard fought physically challenging game for the Aces. The Aces out shot and outplayed the Nationals but the Nationals managed to get one past the Aces. The Nationals goalie fought a hard battle in between the pipes resulting in nothing getting past her.  The Aces pulled goal tender Lott in an attempt to tie up the game with 3 minutes left in the third but the Nationals managed to break it out and with a hard back check and a dive by Aces defender Jacklyn Hettinga in attempt to stop the Nationals getting the puck in the Aces net. However, the Nationals player was able to beat the strong defense-woman to the net resulting in a 2-0 lead. The girls had a solid all around weekend and played the best hockey that they have yet this year! Paul Coffey said it best “Hockey’s a funny game. You have to prove yourself every shift, every game. It’s not up to anybody else. You have to take pride in yourself.” Our girls lived this quote over the weekend and the coaching staff takes a huge sense of pride in these young players. Let’s keep the fire lit girls! Onward and upward!
