The Stratford Egg Farmers of Ontario Atom Aces
were in action at the 2015 Stratford Aces Festival Cup Challenge this past
weekend. The girls played great all weekend long getting put out in the
semi-final game by the eventual tournament champions. The girls proved that
with a little “hustle and heart” they can compete with any team in their
division.
In their first game on Friday the Aces came out flying beating the South Huron Sabres 6-0. Olivia Harding (2), Jacklyn Hettinga, Hailey Scott, Megan Bach and Madi Cardno scored the goals with assists going to Clara Schuster, Avery Nickel and Belle Houle. The second game of the day ended in a tie with their rivals the West Huron Wave with Harding and Cardno scoring and a helper from Scott. Ella Van Bakel was consistently aggressive forcing the opposition into timely errors.
On Saturday morning they faced the Cambridge Roadrunners. The girls fought hard but couldn’t buy a 3rd goal and had to settle with a 2-2 tie with goals scored by Brooklyn Chadwick and Hettinga. A loss to Belmont ended the round robin play with the Atom’s having enough points to get into the semi finals. That game saw determined efforts by Anna Tigani and Nicole Hahn.
Sunday’s semi final was another great hockey battle against the West Huron Wave. The game was exciting with each team scoring a goal in the first period. Unfortunately the gas ran out with just over two minutes left in the third when the Wave scored giving them a 2-1 win. Bach scored the goal for the Aces with an assist from Meg Feore. Both Mia Morris and Kiera Akey played fantastic games in net throughout the entire weekend keeping the competition from getting any easy goals.
