Provincials 2014-2015
The Stratford Cooper Standard Bantam B Aces played three fantastic hockey games at the OWHA Provincial Tournament this past weekend.

Friday’s tournament opener for the Aces resulted in a 3 – 3 tie with the Bellville Bearcats.

Belleville opened the scoring but Joanna Van de Walle buried a Kate Schneider rebound to bring the Aces even. Seconds before the end of the first period, the Bearcats pulled ahead again.

Stratford potted a pair of quick goals in the second period to take the lead. Stacey Shackleton deposited a rebound from an Abby Debus shot. Then, less than a minute later Van De Walle walked out of the corner and went bunk over the shoulder of the Bellville goaltender.

Staying ahead of the Bearcats was a tall enough order without the zebras piling on. Stratford was assessed 5 minor penalties in the third and played much of the period shorthanded. They eventually gave up the tying goal with 2:42 left in the period.

On Friday evening the Aces played a very skilled and physical team in the Temiskaming Shores Punkhounds.

Temiskaming Shores controlled much of the play early in the game but couldn’t solve goaltender Sommer English. Stratford’s Kate Schneider opened the scoring assisted by Tarha Keen. Before the end of the first period The Puckhounds bounced back and tied the game at 1’s.

After a pair of goals early in the second period it looked like the Puckhounds, with the assistance of more bewildered zebras, might run away with the game but Stratford battled back. Abby Debus ripped a wrist shot into the top corner to cut the Temiskaming lead to 1.

Unfortunately, despite a late surge, the Aces were unable to equalize and gave up a 3 to 2 loss.

Saturday morning the Aces needed to win by at least two goals against the North Simcoe Capitals to have a chance to advance beyond pool play.

Rachel Nash put the Aces on the board first with assists going to line mates Madi McKinley and Van De Walle.

Stratford continued to press while limiting the Capitals’ scoring chances. Early in the second period Jessica Blowes finished on a rush assisted by her line mates Jenna Bouwman and Debus. Debus added a goal of her own, also in the second with Avery Boyes picking up an assist.

Nash picked up her second goal of the game by going upstairs on the North Simcoe goalie early in the third period. North Simcoe cut into the Stratford lead but the game ended 5 to 1 after Katie Berg scored from Maddy McNab.

Having done their part to stay in the tournament the Aces players anxiously watched the final period of the game between Temiskaming Shores and Bellville. Only a Temiskaming Shores win would see Stratford through to the next round. Unfortunately Bellville prevailed, scoring a goal late in the game to earn a 3 to 2 win. It was a disappointing finish to the tournament for the Aces but they should be very proud of their performance in the tournament.
