Bantam BB Aces Reach Quarter Finals At Provincials
The Stratford Bantam BB, Cooper Standard, Aces used full team effort to reach the quarter finals at the 2012 OWHA provincial championship tournament held in Toronto and surrounding area this past weekend. In the Bantam BB division twenty four teams competed for gold as well as bragging rights to be named number one in Ontario.  In round robin action Stratford finished first in their pool, with a 2 – 0 – 1 record and a plus five goal for/goal against, giving the team a shot at a bye into the quarter finals.  Friday morning, Stratford faced off against North Simcoe Capitals winning the game 2 – 1.  Alexis Brooks and Brianna Glosnek were the goal scorers with Avery Casey earning a pair of assists and singles going to Megan Achilles and Hannah Bush.

Grace Fountain and Liv Charette both had strong fore checking games for Stratford putting constant pressure on the Capitals defense.  Megan Jackson played well in net for the Aces coming up big on many Capital chances.  Friday night, Stratford went to war against Whitby Wolves in a game which brought bad blood from an earlier season encounter.  Despite being ahead 2 – 1 mid way thru the third period, Stratford took on penalties and was faced with a five on three penalty kill for nearly four minutes.   Although Stratford came close in closing down a strong Whitby power play thru great penalty killing by Alicia Hartung, Alicia Young, Glosnek and Charette, the Wolves eventually capitalized tying the match 2 – 2.  Goaltender Aliya McNeil made great stops throughout the match to preserve the tie.  Brooks scored for Stratford as did defenseman Haley Doell on a nice shot from the point.  Tali Calder and Fountain earned assists in the match.  Saturday morning the Aces played Guelph Thunder easily defeating them 5 – 1.  Glosnek played a strong offensive game scoring a hattrick with Casey adding two.  Glosnek and Casey each had a pair of assists with singles going to Calder, Brooks, Hartung, Achilles, Doell and Emily Drake.  Stratford ended round robin play with a fifth of twenty four overall finish narrowly missing the bye and was forced to play a crossover elimination match against the Clarington Flames. After a scoreless first period, the Flames scored early in the second to take a one goal lead.  Stratford in usual fashion waited until the third period to fill the net three times taking the game 3 – 1 and earning a birth into the quarter finals.  Glosnek, Brooks and Alicia Young scored for Stratford with assists coming off of the sticks of Hartung and Doell.  Achilles played well in the offensive end as did Drake and Bush in the defensive end. McNeil had another solid game between the pipes for the Aces.  In quarter final play Saturday night, Stratford now needed to play off against a well rested Timmins squad.  Despite the Aces pouring every ounce of energy they had left into the match, the Falcons out muscled and hustled Stratford taking a 2 – 0 victory advancing them to the semi-finals.  Jackson came up big in net with many clutch saves to help give Stratford a chance.  Timmins went on later Sunday afternoon to win the tournament Gold metal.  Injured players, Paige Schweitzer and Shannon Tinning showed their team spirit and support cheering loudly over the oppositions' fans each and every game.  The coaching staff would like to commend the players for putting together their individual strengths and abilities to come together as a team this season showing they were a force to reckon with.  GREAT JOB LADIES!!
