The Dunnys Source for Sport PeeWee A Aces had a strong showing in the Durham West Lightning tournament this past weekend, but ended up being eliminated in the semi-final game to the host team.
Stratford opened the tournament on Friday against the Ottawa Ice. McKenzie Dietrich put the Aces on the board late in the first period. Ottawa answered early in the second period but Sydnie Miller popped in a rebound in shortly after to put the Aces on top again. Abby Gilchrist assisted on the Miller goal, which was the first of three assists on the week-end. Ella Wouters played well between the pipes for the Aces, as did the defensemen Kaeley Dunseith and Sara Campbell.
In the second game on Friday, Sophie Bogden led the Aces offence with two goals, while Ally Muir added a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win over the Barrie Sharks. Neely Clarke added the fourth Stratford goal Amber Van Nes and Olivia Galloway were strong on the blue line, helping to keep the puck in the Barrie zone for a good part of the game. Kayley Thompson, recorded the shut out for Stratford, making a number a key saves throughout the game.
On Saturday afternoon, the Aces met up with the Nepean Wildcats. Both teams battled hard, resulting in a great game to watch. The Aces came out on top again, winning 2-0. Sydnie Miller scored for the Aces, as well as Clara Sangster. Emmah Douglas contributed to Sangster's goal which was her first of two nice set ups on the week-end. Chloe Loerzel and Emma Gansevles played strong defensively through the entire game.
The three round robin wins put Stratford on top of their pool and into the semi final game on Sunday morning against the host Durham West Lightning. Unfortunately, the winning streak came to an end and the Lightning took the final game 2-1. Hailey Goforth scored the lone goal for the Aces.
