Atom B Aces win Silver in Festival City Tournament!!
The Atom B Aces capped off a great week-end by winning the silver medal after an exciting game against the West Huron Wave.
In their first game Friday, the Aces defeated the Wilmot Wolverines 4-1. The Aces goals were scored by Ryley Jacobs, Sophie Bogdon, Emma Gansevles, and Neeley Clarke, with assists going to Abby Gilchrist, Jacobs, and McKenzie Dietrich. Anika Akroyd-Snider, and Jessica Rae played well on defence.
Friday evening, the Aces came up against the South Huron Sabres and after a slow start, came back to tie the game in the third period 1-1 with a goal by Abby Gilchrist, assisted by Akroyd-Snider and Kaeley Dunseith.
Saturday morning, the Aces met the West Huron Wave in the first of two meetings of the tourny. The Wave led the scoring in the first period and both teams rallied back and forth with a number of chances. The Aces finally tied the score on a goal by Gilchrist in the third period. Defencemen, Amber Van Nes and Lauren Steel helped out the Aces goal tender Ella Wouters who made a number of great saves.
The Aces went on to meet the London Devilettes in a "must win" game Saturday night. The game was scoreless until London netted one, late in the third period. The Aces rallied back with two quick goals by Gilchrist and Sydnie Miller only 20 seconds apart which sealed the win for Stratford. Danielle Bast and Kaeley Dunseith played strong on the blue line for Stratford.
On Sunday afternoon, the Aces met the West Huron Wave for the second time in the tournament final. The Wave took the lead only two minutes into the game, but their gaol was quickly answered by the Aces Abby Gilchrist, assisted by Sophie Bogdon and Sydnie Miller. The Wave took the lead again in the second, but again the Aces answered back with a beautiful goal by Miller, assisted by Bogdon. Early in the third the Wave netted another and as hard as the Aces tried they could not rally back. After pulling Ella Wouters from the Stratford net in an attempt to tie the game late in the third, the Wave popped the game winning goal in the empty net.
Aces goalie Ella Wouters should be commended for the awesome effort put forth throughout the entire week-end, as well as the rest of the Aces team.
